PaaV gets faux smarter with Jennifer Gibbons
Direct Download: paavjg2.mp3
We somehow convinced Jennifer Gibbons from Red Room to come talk with us about all things groundbreaking on Guiding Light. Clearly she’d never listened to our podcast, she’s way too cool for us. We had a great time and feel 65% smarter now, so win. I looked up a few things she mentioned as being awesome:
-I knew someone would find me the Lisa Brown fantasy sequences. Thanks Laurel!!
-Patrick Erwin – The Right Guy at the Wrong Time
-Jennifer Gibbons – Look out old Laura is back!
And just a note from us. We know about Days, TV Guide, and Carly Manning. We want all of you to know we’re available on twitter, email, or Skype. Feel free to reach out, we don’t bite and chances are somewhere in the 10,000 emotions in us right now, we’re feeling the same way you do. <3

Marina one of the characters who’ve changed drastically? See, would have never guessed that, I knew I’d learn all the important stuff from Jennifer. Marina must have been crazy interesting back then.
Thank you so much for tapping her wisdom for us, I feel a little faux smart too now.
Marina, tse…

Not having listened yet, and just seeing Lisa Brown’s name gets me giddy. Jennifer knows full well that I have dreams of a full scale, Nola-esque Otalia musical number, complete with Buzz in Robert Preston’s Music Man get-up.

How much do I love that Jennifer busted out Beth and Lujack as her OTP!?! They were EPIC. The moony, preteen soap watcher in me emitted a high pitched squeal and danced around the room. I can remember believing that they represented what love was like for everyone…two people who clearly belong together but are kept apart, only to be finally united when the hero rides up on his motorcycle to declare his feelings, with life after just a series of sappy montages set to the tune of “Almost Paradise.”
Thanks for yet another opportunity to geek out over the wonder that is Guiding Light. :p

Happened upon your podcast accidently and was thrilled — it was so much fun to remember the old “Guiding Light”
Thank You.

Man – we must discuss the difference between the treatment the Luke/Laura and Holly/Roger rapes got in the press….and the whole jumping the shark business….Maureen’s being killed off was sad but, IMO, necessary for dramatic development. Really interesting stuff for Roger, Holly and Ed came out of it.
OMG…Johnny Bauer…he had a venereal disease scare, which was pretty damned funny.

Thank you guys, that was fascinating – and I don’t even consider myself particularly interested in GL’s history. Lots of fascinating points though. E.g. African American characters being reduced to the part of sympathetic listeners – still totally Mel’s role, unfortunately that probably won’t change before September 18.
Re the impeding demise of Olivia SexOnAPlatter Spencer and resurrection of Carly Manning: Arggh, crap, crap, crap! Nooooooooooooooo, Olivia!!! Thanks, I feel a little better now.

Options:
1) Continue the fight to save GL/Otalia: Crystal wasn’t definitive enough and/or is still under contract to Telenext
2) Eh, who cares?
3) If anything, fight to actively KILL GL/Otalia, on the chance {guard your eyes, Dani} Olivia might be re-cast!
4) Something else?
Discuss, if existential despair or hangover permits…

LAna- It is written down in my notes for you.
And JCF- I dont want you to think we are ignoring you. We’re going to discuss it in Monday’s podcast, so just hang tight angel.
XO

I began listening to this yesterday but needed to stop because the alcohol discussion at the beginning was making me queasy – damn mojitos
I did listen today though and feel infinitely smarter about GL. I even went back and watched some more of the old episodes on You Tube that I’d avoided because I didn’t understand the characters or history. Good stuff…thanks!

Whew! Finally listened, so I can be on-topic (for a second or two *g*).
First, a one-off re Archie&Veronica— if Veronica marries Archie, I predict scenario much like the classic Joan Rivers marriage joke: “First husband: fake furs, real orgasm. Second husband: real furs, fake orgasm!” You’re setting yourself up to be dumped, Arch.
OK, re GL: I was really fascinated by the discussion of alcoholism and AA . . . because that was exactly my preferred “What happens to Olivia when Natalia leaves?” scenario!
As y’all probably know by now, I’m the resident “spiritual dimensions of Otalia” fan-wanker (Yes, I combine spirituality and wanking: gotta problem wit’ dat? ;-p)
In seeing “trouble on the horizon” for Otalia (trouble we’ll never get to see now, after September 18, but nevermind
), it’s in the (to use a Biblical term) “unequal yoking” between Olivia and Natalia in this area.
Regarding Natalia’s spirituality, Olivia has EITHER been 1) mocking or 2) shallowly imitating (”I pray!”: sure ya do, Liv. The occasional “God get me out of [this mess of my creating]“, at most, does not a spiritual life make)
If—following the Sturm&Drang of Natalia’s departure—Olivia were to go on a bender, she could hit the proverbial “rock bottom”, come to her senses, and go to AA. Thereby, she could begin to grapple w/ just Who or What her “Higher Power” is, and Shazam! Find a common ground w/ Natalia in that aspect of their lives (i.e., the aspect of the spiritual quest, NOT that Liv would necessarily become a Catholic—or a Catholic again, if that’s her “San Cristobel” {I still can’t help snorting when I say that place} up-bringing).
OK, this concludes JCF’s pointless spec/fanfic of the night…
