This is probably one of our rantiest podcasts ever. It could be because Dani’s blood alcohol content was 90% pinot grigio. But probably not. If this week didn’t inspire you to go on a rant yourself (share in the comments!) then we apologize in advance. We bitch because we love, and this week was damned frustrating. At least we got the backwards wave and a few other tidbits. Unwind with us, it’s cathartic.

    Notes:

    - Frank or Alan?

    - Thanks to Rachel (spiderweb55) for being our first ever live studio audience!

    - Do you have to act so gay? One more reason to love Otalia

    - “Struggling Soaps Seek New Niche” – tvweek

    - We’re still talking Guiding Light questions for our Jennifer Gibbons podcast

    - Also taking questions for the Tello Girls re: their JL interview or any of their other interviews

    - Start thinking about your top 10 Otalia moments for our special 10th podcast!

Enjoy the 4-day Otalia week, everyone.

      Cuz I’m competitive… 1st. Yay ;) … Ahem, back to listening.

    2. Liz on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 9:09 am

      ROFL Lynda. I l<3ve you.

    3. Rachel on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 9:14 am

It was an honor sitting in on ya, ladies. If there’s a next time *crosses fingers*, I’ll bring some notes ;)

Btw, how was the hangover, Dani?

    4. Lana, Snapper, Whatever on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 9:25 am

      Definitely Alan.
Does Dani have a CD she’s plugging? I think Dani singing should become a regular PaaV feature.

    5. ashleelynn7 on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 3:26 pm

Um Alan for sure, no question. Frank is just…ewwwwww.

I really don’t know what to say because you guys basically took everything I was thinking and put it in your podcast. How do you do that? ;)

Dani,Go Go Gadget Dimples, really? LMAO Hilarious.

Liz, asshattery is totes my new favorite word.

Oh and I must be thinking about how many more times I can use the word “seriously” in one sentence so my comment will end up in future podcasts. LOL.

In conclusion, yet again, you guys rock my socks :)

    6. Diane on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 3:32 pm

fabulous once again. must point out (begrudingly, because i feel your pain), that rafe mentioned being a cop before the whole shoot-jeffrey-in-the-courtroom bit. in fact, he considered enlisting in the marines to get around his juvenile problems (which apparently continue to this day, despite reaching the age of maturity).

    7. Diane on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 3:59 pm

coffee and lattes is, i think, from seinfeld — coffe at night is not coffee at night. not sure what coffee in the middle of the day is — 2nd base? or, given the show’s progression, headlock on the couch?

    8. Dani on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 4:09 pm

Lynda – you win for many reasons. ;)

Rachel – I actually did not feel too bad the next morning. Sleeping for 12 hours will do that. Copious amounts of water is key!

Lana – Okay, that was/is the one embarrassing thing from the drunken podcast. No more karaoke!

ashlee – This is why we love you guys – you can accept when we need to rant. Probably because everyone wanted to rant after last week.

Diane – I had heard that before we did the podcast, but I couldn’t find a clip, so I figured someone would provide us the info. Rafe is still a douche. Ah, Seinfeld, right. Good call.

    9. tallulah71 on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 5:21 pm

I’m pretty shallow, so finding out that Olivia had an actual office, with a desk, pretty much made up for any other shortcomings last week had to offer.

Dani, you said you were going to refer to Orlagh Cassidy as the OC, then you started talking about Seth on the OC and I got really confused and disturbed. Also, after the Natalia as Inspector Gadget idea, I’m picturing Alan, as Natalia walks away, saying “I’ll get you next time Gadget, next time.” And of course, Emma is totally Penny.

    10. Lynda on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 5:57 pm

OMG it’s nearing midnight and I’m still listening to the podcast. I’m over processing a podcast dedicated to the same… That is what happens when your gf fails (not a typo ;) asleep and you are wide the frak awake!!

If I had a website “Bitches make out !” would be its banner.

I heart you guys. It’s true.

    11. Dani on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 6:40 pm

tallulah – I’m sorry for confusing you! I will never be mentioning the television show “The O.C.” again – so from here on out, Orlagh Cassidy is officially the OC.

      Emma is totally Penny.

Lynda – LOL, I would surf your website every day! We heart you more. Get some sleep!

    12. Liz on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 6:40 pm

Is that a button suggestion I hear from Lynda?

    13. JCF on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 6:44 pm

Alan. (Of course, my version of “doing” him might include emasculation but… ;-X)

I’m half-way through #8: interesting takes on “Rage” (aka Rafe). I find myself agreeing w/ both of you! [Just don't say nuthin' TOO bad re My Dimples ;-) ]

I’m sure I had some questions for the Tello Two (re JL), but whoops, they’re gone again…

I was going to start listing “Top 10 Scenes”, but by the time of your 10th podcast, I really, REALLY hope there will be a new #1? Please? Pretty please???

    14. Selma on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 6:56 pm

      Hey Dani and Liz,

I just had to get on here to tell you guys how much I love your show. Really, I do. I only found out about your podcast about a week ago, but since then, I’ve gone through all of your shows. Let me tell you, standing at this end, hearing the shit that comes out of your mouths, I’ve gotta say, you guys are a riot. I love how straight-forward you are about every facet of Guiding Light. It’s so refreshing to hear people give “creative feadback.” Listening to you guys makes me feel okay about shouting obscenities at my tv when I sense a problem. For example, I was thinking: “Are you all seriously wearing the same clothes from last week. This can not be the same day! Natalia freakin’ ordered chicken. That’s dinner food! Clearly, this day should have ended last week.” Then you guys brought it up on your show, and I felt vindicated. There’s probably a better example, but whatevs. Thank you guys for doing what you’re doing. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that you put into the podcast–from the intro song to the closing statement. It’s all good.

p.s. i think you guys would make a cute couple…no pressure

    15. Liz on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 7:36 pm

Lana, I agree that Dani should always sing. She wrote a rap, but she’s never done it. Just saying…

Ashlee, we live in your brain. Obvs.

Diane, I’ve never seen it, I refuse to believe it. ;) Also, it would seem it was new info to Natalia- so I stand by my ‘get the hell over it you baby’ stance.

Tallulah, drunkenness makes her crazy rambling crazier.

JCF, I cant be too hard on dimples. I want to smack her, but then I’d kiss the boo boo. And then I’d run because I think Olivia could easily take me out if she wanted.

Selma, I think we’d make a cute couple. Come on Dani! Give in!! Also, its totally fine to shout at the TV. Thanks for your comment- we really appreciate the lurve. :)

      XO

    16. bookviper on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 7:37 pm

Dani, you have hijacked my brain. Now I can’t watch Nat in that coat without the Inspector Gadget theme playing in my head. Well done. ;)

    17. stargazzer77 on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 7:39 pm

Im thinking the line “you want what you want when you want it” should of been “you get what you want when you want it” then Olivia’s line would of made sense.

Thanks to listening to your podcast at work i spent 2hrs talking otalia with my area manager instead of answering awkward f@@king questions about my job i cant answer coz i turn up every day and bluff it, so thank you .

Pretty much the entire male cast before Frank!

      Great podcast as always!!

    18. Alexa on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 7:41 pm

      Hi Liz and Dani,

Excellent podcast as usual. I’m glad you felt like ranting this week, because honestly, so did I. Many great lines again this week. I probably laughed the hardest at, “I don’t want to see that on television” and “Bitches, make out!”

Can’t wait for the 4-day Otalia week to start and then to listen to what you have to say about it next Monday.

    19. Porter on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 8:22 pm

In the past, my relationship with podcasts as a genre has been rocky to say the least. I’ve been on a lot of first podcast dates, but it’s always the same… 10 minutes in, my brain hurts from all the pretension and overstatement of importance. I’ll even admit to more than few instances of excusing myself to “go to the bathroom” and never quite making it back to my ear buds. Really, I was getting cynical. I mean why try again just to be disappointed? And just as I was resigning myself to a life of podcast spinsterhood, I chanced a blind date with PaaV#6, during which I helplessly turned into one of those cartoon characters with heart shaped pupils, shooting pink and red hearts all over the room out of my eyes. What I’m trying to say is, PaaV, you are clearly my podcast soulmate…will you marry me?

Seriously, Liz and Dani, you guys crack my shit up! The intelligent wit and snark mixed with the goofy hilariousness is too delicious a combo to be missed. You two make the endlessly frustrating life of an Otalia fan positively bearable.

And I truly believe that every time a wickedly funny Dani one-liner reduces Liz to a speechless, squeaking mess of amusement, that somewhere in the world, a would-be couple mired down in too many weeks of processing just shut-up and kiss already.

    20. Liz on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 9:59 pm

Bookviper, Dani high jacked my brain and my pants long ago…

Stargazzer, Yay for Otalia instead of work!! I feel like you made the right decision.

Alexa, This week would make anyone want to rant! Blerg!! Im counting the MINUTES until this Otalia week starts.

Porter, I love you for that entire first paragraph. Its ranty and funny and awesome and 100% win. Not sure we deserve it, but Im glad to have assisted you in finding the podcast love. As soon as podcast to person marriage is legalized, we’re all yours.

      XO

    21. JCF on Mon, 8th Jun 2009 10:41 pm

Im thinking the line “you want what you want when you want it” should of been “you get what you want when you want it” then Olivia’s line would of made sense.

Exactamundo. Who know why it (the line) came out the way it did: Otalia (and everyone who creates it) ROCKS, but nobody’s pergect.

      ***

May I whore my own writing again? (Well, I’m going to! ;-D)

Re your contention, Liz (I think) that “we’ve been going backwards since April’s Almost-Datenight”, I want to refer you to article I wrote about (yes, again: GEEK) Xena, over here. In it, I contend that XWP’s famous “Quest Kiss Scene” came *too early* in the show’s overall narrative, and set up expectations that were difficult (if not impossible) to meet.

I really think something similar may be true about DateNight. For being all of about 72 hours since the Wedding-of-Doom, all the hand-holding and “Come in for latte” really was Too Soon. With the expectations it set up, it’s no wonder that feel like there’s been slippage.

That said, re this week (or maybe, {pray} next?): C’mon! Make Out, Bitches!

    22. Kishiyaya on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 12:43 am

      Liz/Dani

THANK YOU! What no snarky remarks? Nope, not here.

I didn’t know until I sat through the podcast tonight that I needed an utter rant, in fact I needed to let it run through me like a primal scream…very therapeutic mind you (and on top of it, the fact that you were riproaringly funny was a complete bonus).

Last week was not just frustrating, it was my first honest to goodness crisis of confidence that I’ve had with the s/l and I needed to figure out why I was so thrown, despite having some nice moments to take away from it. But it was just that moments, I was left with pretty snapshots, but the actual trip was hellish and unsatisfying.

Like you, I’ve been with the show, appreciating the steps and the complexities being thrown at the couple, and not minding the slow pacing (really I was the last defender I think)…until this past week. Instead I felt the lost opportunities, the WTF’s, the rehashing, the lack of shared on-screen time – this was all not okay, and it left me unsettled and a little saddened.

I still have faith that it WILL be okay and great again, but its also okay to want more and better from GL in regards to how the story continues to unfold. Yes, they raised the bar, but in doing so, when they’re off, its going to be glaringly so (and all the charm of CC/JL ain’t going to save it particularly when they aren’t allowed to be in the same airspace long enough). Painful, and I’m glad we’re moving on – if they were on just a day this week, you may have just seen a puff of smoke where I used to be standing.

So again huge thanks. Crisis of confidence averted, and the PaaV podcast saved the day. As tough as it was, you put words where they needed to be said. As always, you’re my heroes, and I couldn’t love you more.

    23. Lynda on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 10:57 am

“Is that a button suggestion I hear from Lynda?” it is now :) … that and “probelsome”

Loving the comments, they pretty much amount to:
PaaV : Saving Otalia fans one podcast at a time (apparently)

    24. Liz on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 1:33 pm

Oh snap Lynda, we might have to beg and plead and offer naked pictures to Nicole to use ‘probelsome’.

Kishi- we dont allow snark here. Take it outside sister.
The slow pace is honestly fine with me. I’m cool with it. Its the WTF moments I’m less cool with. Its the fact that I don’t believe half of what happened last week, especially considering the week before. Its the fact that they are re hashing the SAME dialogue not just week to week, but scene to scene.
But today was a better day. Even if it was 90% because of Crystals dark hair. This week will be awesome, I know it will. I’ll just pretend last week didn’t happen.

Also, I feel like I need a cape. If we’re going to be saving Otalia fans, I demand a cape dammit! Dani, get on that shit and stat.

      XO

    25. Lana, Snapper, Whatever on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 2:35 pm

While you’re on the superhero kick, you need to develop your own version of the Bat Signal. More importantly, I may just have to make one of my custom lunchboxes depicting you as the newest dynamic duo. Yes. I make lunchboxes. My geekdom is complete.

    26. Lynda on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 6:58 pm

Dani seems far to acquainted with pricing schemes for certain phone lines and as such might be too preoccupied for cape demands Liz, but no fear I’ll happily accommodate any request ;) … Lana’s all over that shit too so your peeps got your back.

There’s definitely something wrong with you (and by you I mean me) when you find yourself on ebay searching out Captain Planet rings.

… the question of Nicole’s acceptance might tip in the right direction, if, in a addition to the nakedness, their was a promise of strategic positioning of buttons on ones person. ;) How can she resist that.

    27. Liz on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 7:44 pm

A- We do need a batsignal. I’m on it.
B- Like, real lunchboxes? Like you could carry a lunch in? Or like, digital lunch boxes? Both are awesome, one is awesome + win + I want one!

Lynda- ROFL I’ll try that tactic. And dude, does Ebay have Captains Planet rings? Now I must go find one. Dani, get off the porn lines and find me a cape woman.

    28. Annika on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 8:10 pm

And a Podmobile….definitely a Podmobile, to go with the cape.

    29. Annika on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 8:14 pm

What can it mean that my “comment is awaiting moderation?!” Was it too extreme–too politically slanted? I have no idea what that means.

    30. Liz on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 8:15 pm

It means you’re a slacker who hasnt commented on the new site yet. Every first post is moderated to avoid spammers. We know our post is good. We dont need Viagra. Thanks though.

    31. Lana, Snapper, Whatever on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 8:51 pm

Real lunchboxes. I have a friend who still brings her lunch to work in the Great Literary Women lunchbox I made for her 15 years ago. Complete with Willa Cather thermos. We’ll talk. I’ll see if I can hook you up with something.

    32. Liz on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 9:22 pm

Lana, I sent you an email.

    33. jennifer on Tue, 9th Jun 2009 11:36 pm

Thanks ladies for such a fun romp each week. I have a boring-ass job and you perk up a hum-drum day for me. I’d share my good mood with my coworkers after listening, but not sure if they deserve it.

Really enjoyed the discussion this week about the role Olivia has as a parent and partner. I relate to the frustration you both have ranted about. Yes, I also enjoy the pace of this story, but “COME ON” to quote Liz. I agree that is was a weird, unsatisfing week of Otalia (tiny exception for “you are so worth waiting for”). I wonder if the writers were distracted from the stuff we have seen onscreen to work on the year of storylines that rumors said JLH had to do to present to new networks. That kind of workload could distract them from the day to day of what they were already working on. I don’t know, just wondering if the behind the scenes stuff is impacting us a little bit. Keep up the great work, loving you guys!

    34. Liz on Wed, 10th Jun 2009 4:48 pm

I think we decided that JLH must have been on vacation. Or an intern dropped the scripts, spilled coffee on them, something. All has been redeemed this week though, just like I knew would happen. Thanks for listening Jennifer!
      XO

    35. JCF on Wed, 10th Jun 2009 9:19 pm

WooHoo! We can now talk about the Spoiler-Not-To-Be-Mentioned! (Tello Grrls FTW: “Olivia visits a Sex Toy Store”)

And speaking of which (Otalia and Teh Horny): can somebody more familiar w/ Pre-Otalia comment? I think we have every reason to believe that Olivia has “Been to the Mountain Top” (and Over!) before (the scene w/ Bill about to Go Down on her was strongly indicative, IMO ;-p).

But all the years that Natalia carried a torch for Gus . . . that certainly wasn’t over their WhinyMumbles-Conceiving Night was it? (We sure as heck know that Furtz didn’t do it for her!)

My point (and I do have one): Olivia is as Horny-as-Hell . . . because she KNOWS what she’s missing. Is it possible that Natalia isn’t (doesn’t seem to be—her frustration is more to do w/ WhinyMumbles, currently), because she doesn’t?

I hate to speak ill of the dead (Gus, when he and Nat got back together in Springfield), but maybe Natalia has NEVER been acquainted w/ the Almighty “O” (this “O” not standing for Olivia … just yet! ;-D).

This is all by way of saying, that once Liv has awakened La Tigress in Natalia, LOOK OUT! There won’t be enough hikes, yoga, sex toys, or even whiny, mumbling progeny to get in the way of Natalia Gettin’ Some! [At the very least, I'm hoping for a daytime-allowable post-orgasmic-glow scene ala From Here to Eternity: Natalia, channeling Deborah Kerr, "I never knew it could be like THIS".]

      {pause}

Damn, now I’m going to have to visit Springfield’s Certain Store… ;-X

    36. JCF on Fri, 12th Jun 2009 2:09 am

      What a day.

What an OVER-STUFFED day of exhilaration and disappointment.

      * Birth of Dimples Jr, Ivy Lola Malloy (Welcome to the World!) :-)

      * Otalia stepping up to new heights of romance-moving-inevitably (if w/ dramatic pauses) -to-SEX. :-D

      But then—

      * The announcement that CC is returning to Days of Our Lives after September 18. Come the Autumnal Equinox, Otalia is Kaput. :-( ..

      Too much, today.

    37. bonita on Fri, 12th Jun 2009 2:29 pm

nice work folks. i think part of the problem with last week and this is that the writers are trying too hard to stretch the story out. i’m looking forward to you addressing how it is possible they did not kiss after all that they said and did this week. i’m on board with the angst and the slow movement, but really, they are truly straining the credibility now–how the fuck do you get that close to the woman you love (theeeee love of your life!)and not kiss her?

    Comments?
