PaaV Podcast #17
Direct Download: paav17.mp3
Warning: this podcast is a hot mess. We’re going to use the “No Otalia” discombobulation defense and also say that we love you enough not to leave you hanging on Monday mornings, even when GL lets us down.
PaaV listener and hottie author Mari SanGiovanni was kind enough to send us copies of her book, “Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer.” So while we actually enjoyed our reprieve from watching Olivia alcoholically self-destruct, we spent our time wisely – reading. What’s the verdict? Lesbians CAN have happy endings! You heard it here first. Thanks, Mari.
Buy the book. As of now Amazon says it has four in stock. Y’all better get on that! (added later- clearly Amazon is on crack because for a while today it said they were sold out and now they have two in stock.)
Links:
- “Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer” on Amazon
- god I suck with the links because
- I cannot find the nelson branco post OR the mala bhattacharjee one (hey Dani- Mala is in print, and what Branco post?)
- Otalia has a thing or two to say to CBS
- Otalia – The Missing Episode
- Clarissa Marler’s Family Powerpoint, a tribute to Blis
- Dear Friend – What Natalia should have said to Frank
Also hey Dani- what about Roger Friedman and Lana and Maeve?

what a nice way to start a Monday morning – thanks. A little update on Fritz, the reason he looked so calm in the picture was because he was still partially sedated but he’s doing much better, I’ve taken off the cone because I couldn’t stand those sad eyes he was giving me and he’s looking forward to when Jessica comes back so his mom will stop moping. By the way I hate it when people refer to themselves as their pet’s ‘parents’ but it seems that i have become one of those people so i thought i should embrace it.

I love you guys I needed this on a monday. But did you guys know that when Nat comes back she actually breaks up Liv’s date with of all people Matt the nat he’s so annoying buzzing around every womans ear.

Hello, Liz and Dani:
I had never heard the term “asshat” until I heard Dani use it to describe Rafe and Frank C. Now, everyone is using it. In a literal sense, what exactly is an asshat?
I know that by asking this question I might be labeled an asshat, but really, I’ve gotten to the age where staying alive and well is more important than any label. So,can you help this poor aging, yet loyal fan of paav, and explain asshat in graphic detail please.
Love and kisses!
Lynn

Even if there is No Otalia this week I hope that you two do a show next Monday because it gives me something to giggle about while I’m at work. So yeah I’d listen to y’all and I know I’m not related.
Good luck

you gals must’ve been whacked with the awesome stick because you’re much stronger than me. i feel like we’re all involved in this 5,000(+)-legged race and JL is waving at us from the finish line. Some of us dropped off at the start of the maternity leave, others (like myself) are hanging on but are really faltering. You two, though, just march on like the Energizer Bunny of Otalia love. Wow. Not only that, you somehow inspire others to keep on racing. You’re like, “There’s goose, autographed pics, and photo-ops at the end, guys.” Nice. I heart you a lot today for not going the easy route and forgoing a podcast. You kept me sane.
maggie23 on Mon, 10th Aug 2009 8:04 pm
even in a notalia week, you kids rock. not sure if you read the cc chat transcript from saturday, but i think things look promising – i look forward to your upcoming podcasts and a return to the snark, criticism, and otalia wit of days gone by. not to say you two couldn’t roll on any topic, but i miss the scene breakdowns and your unique synopses…
lynn, i only know this because i had to ask too…it scares me to say this, but this podcast has expanded my vocabulary….ugh…. and though i was already familiar with the words douchebag and wussie, i never thought they would be used in reference to me
but that dani, she’s pretty sensitive and, so i’ve heard, rather high maintenance – maybe she’ll grow out of it?
anyway, after extensive online research, i have gleaned from reliable sources that an asshat is someone who has their head so far up their ass they can wear it as a hat. nice visual say i…lol
cheers,
Dani on Mon, 10th Aug 2009 8:16 pm
greenivy – glad to hear about Fritz! I used to think people that treated their pets like royalty were such douches. then I adopted a tabby kitten and the little hooch wrapped her little claws around my heart. I’ve definitely referred to her as my baby.
Kristeena – thanks for the sweet words! Both Liz and I were like, WTF are we going to do? luckily we like talking to each other enough to improvise. you guys are dolls for finding something to enjoy in the hot mess week.
Lynn – have no fear, you’re not an asshat. worse would be not asking and using it wrong (although really, it’s appropriate anywhere). maggie got it right below: it’s a person who has their head up their ass so far it becomes hatwear.
Chi – cousin Chi, is that you? I kid, I kid. thanks! you guys are sweet.
SelmaHinkley – you’re most welcome. I love the visual of a thousand-legged race. except in my version, JL is not offering us photo ops.
what say we keep each other sane, deal? deal.
maggie – believe me, we can’t wait for some juicy otalia bits again. it feels like forever since they were in an actual scene together. who told you I was sensitive and high maintenance? I just need a name! and maggie, you know I think you rock something fierce, right? thank you for educating the commenters on the glory of asshat.
Porter on Mon, 10th Aug 2009 11:25 pm
I, for one, enjoyed your meandering book review. And from what I can gather, the book was really funny. :p
Is it freakin’ August 17th yet? Yeesh.
Dani- I can handle some affectionate abuse. Next time I see you, I’ll be sure to push you down by the tetherball courts and steal your favorite pencil so we’re even.
Liz- Your PR efforts re:my relative hotness are much appreciated. Where were you when I needed you back in high school? :p
Lynn on Tue, 11th Aug 2009 8:58 am
Thanks, Maggie, for the, yes, very descriptive definition of an asshat. It is now, officially, my favorite word.
btw August 17 is my birthday. I am getting Otalia for my BD! How awesome is that? Yay!
Lynn
Liz on Tue, 11th Aug 2009 10:22 am
greenivy- I’m glad the poor guy is feeling better. I was always my doggies mama. Embrace the geek. Its good for you.
Kristeena- thank you, thats so nice. Hah! We are def NOT book reviewers. Lesson learned.
Lynn- Maggie23 got it. Basically just a jerk. Just wait until I break out the douchenozzle.
And I’d never call you an asshat! Dani on the otehr hand, probably would. She’s pretty much mean.
And Yay for your birthday! Happy Early Bday!
Chi- We wont have any more non Otalia weeks until the show ends. And even then, we’ll still be around. Doing… something… lol
Selma- We’re so so close to Jessica Leccia goodness. I can taste it! Its gonna be good, I just know it will be.
Lovely Maggie23- I havent read the transcript, but I was there.
The chat didnt helpme anymore than the actual people telling me things will be fine. And whoever said Frank and Natalia get back together are very wrong and very cruel. Talk about a douchenozzle. And dont let Dani lie to you- shes super high maintenance. lol Not really, she routinely takes care of me. Like right now actually.
Porter- I for one- am glad you liked it. ish. Its not yet Aug 17th. And I dont know where I was while you were in high school, because we would have been making out in the locker room. A lot.
Probably better. I enjoy having a high school diploma.
Thanks everyone for listening this wild week. We love ya all!
XO

This truly is a red, hot mess, but you’ve convinced me to give this book a try, so I guess it’s a success.
Unlike that Mala Bhattacharjee chick, I never, ever said that losing a woman to another woman was one of Frank’s tragedies. What I did say – and still maintain – is that he was totally used by both Natalia and Olivia, and that he’s a victim of the entire situation. Frank is a sad sack – it’s true….but he’s basically following a Springfield rule, because the town seems to be chock full of assholes, morons and people who have taken leave of any moral or ethical code. And, you know what Frank has never done? (Time, once again for my Kevlar vest, because fangirls pack a wallop) He’s never pretended to love someone, and even agreed to marry them, just to prove to himself that he’s not gay. And he’s never left town without any word to the person who loves him and counts on him, on the most important day of that person’s life. And he’s never considered picking up his kid from day camp, and driving around town with her while drunk. At worst, he’s a really dumb guy who got really lucky with a smart, beautiful woman once, and can’t figure out why nothing has gone right, since.

liz wrote: “lovely maggie23″…see dani? that’s how you talk to a woman…not all, a big ol’ bucket of extra bitchy, what with all the name calling. although, liz did ask me to take off my pants, which has caused untold scads of grief for me here at home, lol
wanted to share…i’m all over the place with your podcasts. i came to paav late compared to y’all…found it accidentally while doing a google search for a specifc otalia scene that resulted in a link to the brilliant paav top 10 ep. well, today, i came across an episode i hadn’t listened to before – week 10. apparently, this was the week liz realized that she could channel/mind meld with the g/l writers…albeit, it was only to choose which video rafe and emma were going to watch, but this is where she also unequivocally insists that by week 20 of their podcasts ( a mere 2 and a half weeks from now) olivia and natalia will make out!
talk about hot snack, lol…liz, that’s me reclaiming the phrase – hot snack from this point forward for me will be thought of as a morsel of hot otalia sex on a plate
with a shot of vodka straight out of the freezer on the side. now, that’s my idea of a hot snack, with a nice cool chaser. cheers all
Dani on Tue, 11th Aug 2009 8:53 pm
Lana – I don’t disagree with you. I just don’t want to ruminate on Frank’s misery, we got enough of our own around these parts! Also, his current douchbag behavior precludes any and all sympathy from me.
maggie – oh, I give up. the whole reason I was imploring you all to stand up and use hotsnack proudly was because flirty mcflirtenstein over there was taking away your vocab rights. but I am perfectly fine out here on hotsnack island by myself.
as to liz’s greater awesomeness, I will never contest that fact.
Liz on Tue, 11th Aug 2009 9:23 pm
Lana- You are my GL expert, so whatevs. But sorry- no. Frank absolutely used Natalia for comfort and distraction after Coop’s death, and thats probably why he fell in love with her. I dont think he really loves her, I dont. He treats her like dirt, as far as Im concerned. And I know you never said anything about Frank being left for a girl.
Maggie- 2 1/2 weeks, Woot woot! Also, a gchat convo from Dani and I tonight:
Dani: hey
me: take off your pants
Dani: okay
me: you are so well behaved

No joke…The Missing Episode is all kinds of fun. The craptastic events of late have brought out the editing geniuses in full force.
maggie23 on Wed, 12th Aug 2009 9:01 pm
love paav, as y’all know…but this is in response to lana’s post. is that okay? do y’all have the ability to delete or forward if not? lol
hey lana…love your stuff on superherolunchbox…but i have to disagree with your “frank as a victim” sentiment (but trust that you won’t need any kevlar with me – at least not in this context, lol)…
let’s recap:
frank shared a couple of kisses with nat – the first of which even he likened to kissing a wet mackarel (sp?);
their sexual encounter was selfserving for both of them: she wanted to bury her feelings for liv and convince herself she didn’t lust after a woman (goddess), and he wanted some pity/comfort sex after the death of coop (actually, he probably just wanted it any way he could get it, but i think on the useage meter, it went both ways – no pun)…after said sex, she lay crying with regret on his chest, all the while he was unaware she loathed every minute of the encounter – yeah, right;
they went on all of about three dates;
he manipulated her situation ad nauseum, ie. rafe’s jail sentence/halfway house internment and his ability to pull strings to benefit himself in nat’s eyes and further his own agenda…
and then!!!! after she left him at the alter!!!! he struck the lowest blow by taking his present (bribe/co-cockblocker) back and returned rafe to the halfway house as punishment for not following through with the wedding?!? wtf???
i can’t at all see how he might be a victim here. i think, at best, it’s unfortunate for him that his best laid (lol) plans didn’t come to fruition, is all. otalia may have been using him to a certain extent to try to prove to themselves and the world that they weren’t falling head over heals in – omg it can’t be lableless same sex (read: lesbian) – love with one another; but frank definitley had his own selfserving agenda for which he was not above manipulation, turning a blind eye, putting undo and untold amounts of pressure upon natalia (rushing her to the alter even though he knew she was conflicted), and finally (though i’m sure there was more) using her son to get his way…hmmmm …. so i guess, nope, frank’s no victim in my eyes…and all of those things that liv and nat have done that disappoint me (and there are many that i can’t reconcile with their character arcs, but instead with lazy crappy writing of late) don’t make frank look more like a victim, but rather make olivia and natalia look like fallible characters…ack, i even gag when i say that, but i can only trash the m/l writing so much, because there was a time when i found the extremely nurtured, patient and profoundly realistic writing really praiseworthy.
so that, in a nutshell, is my take on “frank as a victim”…cheers all,
maggie23

Hey Dani and Liz—
LOVED the podcast—of course I did, since you plugged the hell out of my book! Thanks for all the laughs—here are my comments, not in order of importance…OK, the first one is pretty important:
1. Sorry Liz, Dani was right. My name is pronounced “Mary” (as in “gay man”) it is just spelled Mari, the Italian way. Oh yes, it was great fun going through school hearing the EXACT debate you two went off on at the beginning of your podcast–thanks for the kindergarten flashbacks.
2. Loved the HOT MESS way you chatted about the book—was EXACTLY what I had fantasized about hearing if for some crazy reason you agreed to read and talk about the book…My favorite: I loved the giggling as you questioned why the hell you got trapped into doing this in the first place.
3. LOVED LOVED LOVED: “Drop the cigarettes, buy the book.” I now get to go on believing that my sex scenes and childhood flashbacks are saving lives.
4. Last thought: Your fans are still listening to your podcasts and no, we are NOT related to you (I am speaking for all three of us–me and my DDD “girls”…who each have their own agent.)
Thanks a million—you two are the best.
xoxoxoxo
