The plus side is this podcast was not recorded in the hallway of a hotel.

On the other hand, this week is weird because frankly, we’re feeling weird about the show. We could have extended our collective WTF beyond Otalia into the rest of Springfield (Mallet’s story, for example), but we felt like we’d end up in straitjackets if we did. The dearth of physical intimacy, layered and cerebral writing, and logical editing is slowly sapping our will to snark.

Also, Liz was completely wrong about there being a kiss by our 20th podcast, so feel free to take her to task in the comments (but not too harshly, because then I’ll have to kick your ass). (Don’t worry, she blames herself)

I was inspired by 2 things this week:
      1. Crystal’s wardrobe
and 2. Dani calling Olivia Natalia’s baby mama.

Here’s a limerick for your new collection:

The GL writers have filled us with doubt.
      Anymore, what is Otalia about?
But at the end of the day
I have one thing to say
      God damnit BITCHES MAKE OUT!

    2. SelmaHinkley on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 9:37 am

Heads up, ladies, I just took you into my shower. Well, not literally in my shower, just beside it. Probably not the safest thing considering the risk of water damage, but I couldn’t leave for work until I heard your pod :-)

I thought for sure you guys were gonna talk about the ‘Hitler reacts to no Otalia kissing’ video. It’s hi-larious! That’s not the exact title, so you should do a youtube search.

      K. gotta head out.

Oh, wait. Venty moment. How sad is it that I found out about the Emmys so late? I still drove down to LA to catch a glimpse of the exit, but sadly, there were no CC/JL sitings. I did, however, see most of the male cast of GL. *shrug* What can you do?

    3. Lana, Snapper, Whatever on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 9:45 am

You guys sound so sad – I want to call a congressman, lend you some money, write a letter on your behalf! I know you’re sad if Liz has decided to ignore details. Hon, there was a whole scene in which Billy went shopping for pink lemonade and rubbed it in Matt’s face that he planned to marry Vanessa, and then mention of it, afterwards.

Also, the armed forced will not take a felon, OR a diabetic. I wondered if the fact that Rafe was a minor when he TRIED TO KILL SOMEONE would matter. Evidently, it doesn’t (http://www.army.com/resources/item/2150) The writers clearly didn’t give a shit about facts or history at this point. Why, for instance, does Olivia look so shocked that Holly and Ed have history? Everyone knows Holly and Ed were married, once. It’s a tiny, fucking town, and Olivia was actually friends with Holly (as far as either of them can have a friendship with another woman.) In fact, Holly DATED Ed long after Olivia moved to Springfield.

I’m surprised you didn’t have a little snark re Olivia’s comment about Natalia having “some guy’s baby.” Holly knows full well who Frank is – during her poodle haircut days it was pretty clear the writers were considering pairing them up for a fling (Lame idea that never came to pass) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ylv1RPFfSE

    4. Nik on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 10:27 am

I, too, am finding myself more and more depressed about where we are now as opposed to where we could have been. Basically we are all mirroring Olivia’s position – we saw a future that was everything we could have hoped for, then the writers (or CBS, whatever) basically just up and left us. No reassurances, no promises, just dead air. And now they’re back with these pathetic little burnt offerings of a relationship and we are afraid to invest ourselves in the characters again because we just know we’ll get burned.

I read an interesting article online (of course I can’t remember where it was) listing the top 5 shows you should not miss (like Buffy and Freaks and Geeks) and the top 5 you shouldn’t bother with. A couple of surprises on the ’skip it’ list were Battlestar and The Sopranos. Not because they weren’t excellent shows, but because the endings were so disappointing that it scorned any investment the audience had made in them. This article suggested it was better not to see the shows at all than to be disillusioned in that way.

I am curious what everyone feels their journey with Otalia. Once it’s said and done, do you think you will be able to appreciate what this storyline brought into your life, or is the cliff-dive of story and character going to negate everything you found good in it? Is it the journey or he destination that makes it worthwhile?

I’ll have to let it sit for a while once it’s over, but I know at the least I am so grateful to have been introduced to Crystal Chappell and I am, at this point, sticking with the story more to thank CC and JL for their dedication than for any resolution to the story.

    5. Lisa (Cartwright) on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 12:39 pm

Hi Liz and Dani – great podcast, even when GL Otalia is depressing. If Otalia continues like this, will have to change title of podcast to Pancakes and a Ritalin.
Will you do podcasts once the show does come to an end?

    6. Kristy on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 2:22 pm

      Thank you, Lana.

I was like “WHAT?!?” He has a medical condition AND a friggin’ criminal record! The Army would laugh in his face. He should be f’n grateful to be in the back of the hardware store. He should be kissing Doris’ sweet ASS for that job!

Unless he suddenly develops a talent for football and joins the NFL (f**k you, Michael Vick) the only future he’d have to look forward to is that damn hardware store…until he went to work for Alan, which were I him, I would’ve done in the first place.

Realism, Dani? Really? I’m sorry, Buddy. *pat, pat*

The no kiss ending, or what I will refer to now simply as “Voldemort” has really knocked me off of the enthusiasm wagon.

      *sigh*

I need hug and/or sex with Josh.

    7. Sue on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 2:43 pm

Hello ladies. Still hanging in there with you. Misery loves company? Tough weeks now to do podcast on.

I think everyone is feeling different about the show now. Someone noted today that the pbp only had as many pages as on a no-Otalia day. The magic has left the storyline. The writers let the girls down – something is missing in Natalia’s part to even fix the damage they did when she left.
We don’t need more angst now. I will watch till the end but, I am not enjoying the story now. Yes, what could have been.

    8. jen on Mon, 31st Aug 2009 9:35 pm

So sad…you two need to laugh! While I’m up here peering over all of my ledges…I am so trying to stay spoiler free…counting backwards from 500 over and over helps…

Maybe this isn’t the best time to try out online dating??? OMG you would never believe some of the emails…this second ledge may just kill me. My opinionated kid can run my life just like sh*thead Rafe before I go through with this.

And was I the only one to notice Natalia’s hair went from curly to straight and back more than once?? What up??

Hung over Dani is very cute! And Liz is just so sad…Next week I’m going to take your sad podcast to the local pub…I can drink all of my Otalia sad stuff with you two in my ears.

    9. fannypack on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 4:51 am

Nice podcast, like always. So true about the editing.

And what was that random voicemail thing at the very end about? Inquiring minds want to know. Haha!

    10. Lynda on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 9:37 am

re the question: only the finest ;) .

You guys sound like i feel and it makes me wanna wrap you in warm blankets, massage you and feed you rocky road.

… Liz was vaguely surreptitious about whether or not we got a kiss and then Dani’s like yeah we’re not getting that :D .

      worth a look

    11. Liz on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 10:06 am

I’m already a half hour late for an appointment, so I’ll be back.
But Fannypack wins! We have a stalker. lol Someone keeps calling our number, like 22 times a day, and even though I’ve spoken to her three times and told her she has the wrong number- she keeps calling! Which is supah annoying at 2am. So- as punishment- I put her stupid voicemail on our podcast.

    12. Rikita on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 11:56 am

So sad to see and hear the energy drained out of a fanbase. We didn’t jump off the ledge we were flattened by a huge slimy, stinky garbage truck full of intolerance and indifference. That was probably the only way to really damage such an invested fandom. Well done CBS, P&G, and any other idiot with a title.

Anyway, thanks for trying to make something sort of entertaining out of this last week. Other than the pretty, there wasn’t much to talk about.

I think you gals might have a great post-Otalia career snarking on pop culture- movies, music, tv, gaming. You need to be unleashed to explore the universe. The world needs more of your special blend of snark.

    13. Porter on Tue, 1st Sep 2009 11:26 pm

Paav #20 was, by far, the best thing about Otalia last week… well, maybe it was a tie between PaaV and Olivia’s rooftop date dress, but I digress… Even when you two don’t give a flying fuck, you’re still damn hilarious and I appreciate that muchly. :p

My new favorite answer to dumb questions people ask when they clearly already know the answer: “To get in you’re pants! Duh.” And I’m so glad DJ begged and pleaded for more Ms.Cleo…I can’t wait! :p

As for my highly tuned “Jessica Leccia F-Up” radar, I think I just pay way too much to JL and her dimples. :p

    14. Liz on Wed, 2nd Sep 2009 7:32 pm

Heather- sweet sweet poetry. I lurve it. Also Dani is a nut and I lurve her too.

Selma- dammit! Pictures!! :) Hitler video somehow missed my bookmarks- but next week I’m sure it will come up. Assuming I have my entire brain… We’ll see.

Lana- We’d appreciate a call to your local congressman to get this Otalia effery fixed. I still havent seen last Fridays episode. I suck.

Lana I actually dont think Rafes illness would stop him anymore. Not for all jobs anyway. Not sure though… And we would have snarked on Nat having some guys baby, except- A- I didnt know they had history. And B- I dont think Olivia really likes admitting she’s having Franks baby. If you’ll recall she didnt even tell Josh it was Franks baby until she had to.

Nik- It was supposed to be so great. It started off so great! Ugh. That makes tihs all so sad…
And thats an interesting question. For me, I am very appreciative of the story that was told, and will just pretend it ended about two weeks after the near wedding. That part of the story was beautiful and important and very well told. Just because it ended badly doesnt mean what we got until then was less than that. While I basically agree with the article you read- I think this story is different because it has changed so many minds and opened so many peoples hearts and minds. It wasnt just an entertaining love story, even though it def was that, it was also socially important. So, just like I tell people to stop watching Gilmore Girls at season 5- Im going to reccomend stopping Otalia two weeks after the wedding.

Lisa- I think we’re going to try. Our schedules have both gotten crazy lately and we hardly have time to record right now- but we’ll see. Its super fun and we have a lot of feelings to share so we’ll see. But 95% yes.

Kristy- I can offer you a hug, but the sex w/ Josh thing- you’re on your own there.

Sue- Yay for company! I dont know about the PBP, I fell out of them when we started the podcast (wanted a clean slate for a brain and what not)but yeah, I know I dont spend alllll day anxiously waiting for the clips like I used to.

Jen- online dating doesnt sound so bad. I met my awesome podcast wife online. ;) Its like a real wife only she never makes me dinner. Still, I reccomend it.

Lynda- I’ll be there tomorrow for my massage and rocky road please!

Rikita- It is super sad. So unfortunate when this fanbase was so awesome and so on fire and now we’re all just depressed and tired.

Porter- Mmmm… roof top dress…. Also- can you ever pay TOO MUCH attention to the dimples? Me thinks not.

      XO Liz

      Oy vey.

Early last Spring, I discovered something.

Something well-written, romantic, charming, and with the promise of more. It was Otalia…

websites (chief among them a—say wha?—podcast called “Pancakes and a Valium”). They brought the funny, they were great to look at/listen to, and through them, I got to know a (Ye Gods! :-0) friggin’ soap opera called Guiding Light.

As you two, D&L, so aptly put it, there’s nothing more bitter than a love betrayed.

Ergo, I just can’t do this anymore.

Maybe in a couple of weeks (and a day), I, too, will be hung over and bitching about What All Went so wrong, Wrong, WRONG with Guiding Light. And then I’ll come back to PaaV to commiserate (not to mention a slew of other Otalia sites I bookmarked last Spring, who’ve Gone Hater).

…but until then, I’m going to avoid the negativity, and just enjoy this show I’ve so come to LOVE (Today, 9/3? Out of the Park! :) ). Y’all will still be here, while GL will be but a memory (OK, now I’m getting depressed, too :-( )

      Later—Sweet “Bitches Make Out!” Dreams…

    16. elek on Sat, 5th Sep 2009 10:35 am

Can you please fix/update the link for Natalia curtain-call? Thanks! :)

    17. Liz on Sat, 5th Sep 2009 10:26 pm

      elek- done and done.

    18. Dani on Sat, 5th Sep 2009 10:35 pm

JCF – This is a free society, so go for it. One of the mottoes of our podcast has been everyone should be able to form their own opinion and not walk a pre-set company line for the fandom.

I do, however, have slight beef with being identified as “Gone Hater.” Nope. I’m not a hater, I’m just disappointed with what we’ve gotten as compared to the promise of what could have been months ago.

In my opinion, the negativity comes from blowing an incredible opportunity with Otalia – not from me, or any blogger or commenter who has (rightly) called BS.

All I really need to ask is, if someone had told you back in February/March, we’d be getting these last minute crumbs with no physicality between Olivia and Natalia at all, would you have been excited about that?

Based on all the excitement surrounding the promise of Otalia’s first kiss back then, I highly doubt it. Television is interactive nowadays. I choose not to just sit back and consume, but to process and feedback.
